Welcome to Nanomaterial Sales. Nanomaterials is a field which takes a materials science-based approach to nanotechnology. It studies materials with morphological features on the nanoscale, and especially those which have special properties stemming from their nanoscale dimensions. Nanoscale is usually defined as smaller than a one tenth of a micrometer in at least one dimension,[1]  though this term is sometimes also used for materials smaller than one micrometer.

Nanoparticles are of great scientific interest as they are effectively a bridge between bulk materials and atomic or molecular structures. A bulk material should have constant physical properties regardless of its size, but at the nano-scale this is often not the case. Size-dependent properties are observed such as quantum confinement in semiconductor  particles, surface plasmon resonance in some metal particles and superparamagnetism in magnetic materials.

The environmental impact of nanomaterials

Learn about the Berkeley Lab’s work in nanotechnology’s environmental and human safety issues.
Video Rating: 5 / 5

The Nakajima Laboratory is working to create functional nanomaterials using all kinds of elements. The Lab studies nanocluster and nanoparticle properties and structures from a chemical viewpoint, and develops new types of nanoclusters using unique methods. Q. “A pure material shows a solid or liquid phase formed from the assembly of atoms and molecules. But the behavior of materials varies greatly, depending on how the types of bonding are combined in assembled process. The mixing of other elements means, in a sense, that various types of bonding become competitive to form the most stable species. This makes things diverse, because substances dont necessarily take the forms that researchers expect. So in our research, we produce nanomaterials consisting of nanoclusters by making advantage of various elements in the periodic table. This work includes investigating what features the nanoclusters have.” Nanomaterials of nanoclusters and nanoparticles can be regarded as the smallest units of functional materials. Theyre attracting attention because they may have unique and novel functions, such as luminous, magnetic, or catalytic properties. Nanomaterials may also be different from the types of materials studied so far, which range from atomic assemblies in semiconductor and metal elements to organic and biological molecules. The Nakajima Lab is studying the electronic properties, geometric structures, and stability of nanomaterials, and creating entirely new groups of
